A sad situation that you inherited.

What you can do immediately:

Insist that the DOE does not spend one more cent on Apple products. Regardless of how you position it, including educational discounts, Macs cost twice as much as PCs. It's just economics. Monopoly (Apple) vs. one of the most competitive markets anywhere (PC). Closed vs. Open. Proprietary vs. Industry Standard. Few users vs. Many. High margins vs. razor thin margins. You get the picture.

Then, the support costs are higher also. I recently visited an elementary school principal who had a HUGE Mac on his desk, then an IBM laptop in front of it. "Why 2 computers"? "Most of the stuff I try to look at with the Mac doesn't work, so I need this laptop".

Your mission is to prepare kids - 95% of the world uses PCs. You wouldn't instruct in Portugese for students who will be living and working in the USA. Why are there Macs in the DOE?

My 3 year old can jump on a PC and start browsing, so I know there is no ease of use argument anymore.

For every Mac you see, think "we could have had 2 PCs instead of this one".

Hang in there, and insist the DOE spends no more money on Macs.

I am a student who has many interests. I only like blogging if I am talking about a topic that I am interested or passionate about. Blogging is a great tool used to tell people about your interest. I enjoy blogging and I think it is a great way to express your thoughts and opinions.

I truly appreciate your comments on this topic. It means a lot to me that we are getting feedback from people.

We put tons of hard work and effort into this project and we hope that our story reaches out to people across the world. I encourage you to tell your friends and family about our goal and I hope they give us feedback just as you did. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR OPINION WITH US!!

It is so tough to get them to write about what they are passionate about. This was something that just happened for us -- last year the students had blogs and they did them on topics of interest to them as well.

It is hard to hit on the passion, but now that we have, the students have been emailing me all weekend! I appreciate your feedback and thoughts on this as it means a lot that you took the time to reflect - it will mean a lot to them and me as well and I've linked to this post on my blog (it will be there in the morning.) Thank you so much for sharing!

Love it! I show my students a 2-3 min video a day via vodpod, usually just before the first bell. I have a number who are chronic lates, and they are more motivated to arrive on time this way: I have been showing vids that demonstrate creative communication. As well as the powerful environmental message, it's just plain fun!
